A concert near a residential area, a gala in a hotel garden, an opening near a hospital or a wedding with a vows ceremony… At these events there is something as important as power: noise. The engine noise of a conventional open-frame generator can drown out speeches, cause complaints from neighbours and even get the event stopped. That is why silent generator rental has become the first choice, especially for events in the city.

In this guide we explain what a silent (canopied) generator is, what affects its noise level and the methods used to keep noise under control at the event site.

What Is a Silent Generator?

A silent generator is one whose engine and alternator are housed in a sound-insulated canopy. With sound-absorbing materials, specially designed air inlet and outlet ducts and an exhaust silencer, the canopy greatly reduces engine noise. The super-silent canopied models used for events can run at about 65–70 dB(A) at 7 metres.

This is comparable to traffic on a busy street or the background noise of a crowded restaurant. Correctly positioned, generator noise goes unnoticed in the audience area among stage music and ambient sound.

What You Need to Know About Decibels

  • The decibel is a logarithmic scale: An increase of about 10 dB is perceived by the ear as roughly twice as loud.
  • Distance reduces noise: In open air, sound level drops noticeably with distance from the source. Doubling the distance reduces it by about 6 dB.
  • dB(A) measurement: This is weighted according to the sensitivity of the human ear; generator noise values are usually given this way.

6 Ways to Control Noise at the Event Site

1. Correct positioning

The generator is placed as far as possible from the audience area and homes, while keeping cable runs reasonable. The position chosen during the survey is the most effective step in noise control.

2. Direction of exhaust and air outlet

The generator’s exhaust and hot air outlet are directed away from the audience area and nearby buildings, so neither noise nor exhaust fumes reach guests.

3. Natural and artificial barriers

Buildings, walls, backstage structures and, where needed, acoustic panels act as barriers that stop sound from spreading.

4. Correct sizing

An overloaded generator runs harder and louder. Correct sizing ensures quiet and efficient operation. We explain sizing in our guide what size generator do I need.

5. Splitting the load across several generators

On large sites, placing several generators at different points instead of one large unit shortens cable runs and avoids concentrating noise at a single point.

6. Complying with venue rules

Some venues and residential areas apply noise limits after certain hours. These rules are checked in advance and the generator position and installation and dismantling times are planned accordingly.

Which Events Need a Silent Generator?

  • Concerts and outdoor events near residential areas,
  • Receptions at hotel gardens, waterfront mansions and restaurants,
  • Weddings, engagements and vows ceremonies (outdoor wedding generator guide),
  • Congresses, panels and events with speeches,
  • Film, series and commercial shoots,
  • Events near hospitals, schools and places of worship.

Silent Generators and UPS Together

Power quality is as important as noise. Sensitive equipment such as speech systems, recorders and control room computers is not affected by momentary fluctuations from the generator when fed through a rental UPS. The result is an event that is both quiet and uninterrupted.

Questions to Ask Before Renting a Silent Generator

  • What type of canopy does the generator have, and what is its noise level at a given distance?
  • Where will the generator be positioned relative to the event site?
  • Which way will the exhaust and air outlet face?
  • Will a technician be on site throughout the event?
  • If there are night-time noise restrictions, what plan will be followed?
  • Is UPS support planned for sensitive equipment?

How Is Noise Level Measured?

Generator noise is usually measured at a set distance and in dB(A). At the event site, however, what really matters is the noise level reaching the audience area and the nearest homes. Taking check measurements at these points with a sound level meter after installation is the most practical way to see whether venue or local authority rules are being met. Measuring before the stage music starts shows the generator’s contribution more clearly.

Night Events and Good Neighbour Relations

At events running late into the night, generator noise can become more noticeable as background noise falls. At such events, measures like:

  • Placing the generator at the point furthest from homes,
  • Planning night installation and dismantling to be quiet,
  • Switching off unnecessary loads when the event ends,
  • Informing local residents in advance if needed

both prevent complaints and protect the event’s reputation.

Other Advantages of Silent Generators

The benefit of canopied generators is not limited to noise. The canopy protects the generator from rain, dust and sun, which means safer, trouble-free operation at outdoor events. Lockable canopy doors prevent unauthorised access to the generator, an important safety advantage at crowded events. Canopied generators also look tidier, so they affect the look of the venue less.

At ELSIPOWER our rental generators are super-silent canopied models, and we plan their position together with you during the survey according to the event site and surroundings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a silent generator completely silent?

No, there is no completely silent generator. However, super-silent canopied models run at a level that goes unnoticed at the event site when correctly positioned.

Are silent generators less powerful?

No. The canopy affects only noise and weather protection, not the generator’s power. High-power event generators are also supplied with canopies.

How far from the audience should the generator be?

It depends on the venue layout, barriers and cable distance. The best position is decided together during the survey.

Can a generator be used indoors?

No. Because of exhaust gas, generators are always placed in open, well-ventilated areas; power is carried indoors by cable.
