A golf cart battery determines the range, speed and service life of an electric golf cart. On golf courses, hotels, resorts, residential sites and campuses, one of the most popular choices is the gel battery: maintenance-free, spill-proof and resistant to deep discharge.

What Is a Gel Battery?

A gel battery is a sealed (VRLA) lead-acid battery in which the electrolyte is thickened into a gel with silica. As a result it does not leak, needs no water, resists vibration and handles deep discharge cycles better than standard batteries. See the ELSIPOWER gel battery range.

How to Choose a Golf Cart Battery

  • System voltage: most carts run on 36 V or 48 V, built from 6 V, 8 V or 12 V batteries in series (e.g. four 12 V batteries for 48 V).
  • Capacity and range: hills, load and stop-start driving reduce range — know your daily distance.
  • Deep-cycle design: car starter batteries are not suitable and fail quickly.
  • Charger compatibility: gel batteries are sensitive to overcharging and need a charger with a gel profile.

For moderate use on a budget, gel is a balanced choice; for fleets running all day, lithium batteries often pay off long term. Check charger and controller compatibility before switching to lithium.

Can You Add Distilled Water to a Gel Battery?

No. Gel batteries are sealed; the vents must not be opened and no water is added. Doing so damages the battery and voids the warranty.

Extending Battery Life

  • Charge after every use; never store discharged
  • Use a charger with a gel profile
  • Keep terminals clean and tight
  • During winter storage, keep batteries fully charged and recharge periodically
  • Replace series-connected batteries as a set; don't mix old and new

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a car battery in a golf cart?

Not recommended — car batteries are not designed for deep discharge.

What's the difference between gel and AGM?

Both are sealed and maintenance-free; AGM absorbs the electrolyte in glass-mat separators while gel immobilises it as a gel. Gel generally performs better in deep cycling and heat.
