Guide

What is a sealed VRLA / AGM battery?

A sealed maintenance-free battery is a valve-regulated (VRLA) lead-acid battery whose electrolyte is absorbed in glass-mat separators (AGM). It needs no water top-up, has very low gassing and can be used safely inside cabinets, which makes it the most common type of UPS, power supply, shutter and alarm battery.

Alongside Yuasa, CSB, DataSafe, Fiamm and Sprinter batteries for uninterruptible power supplies, we supply ELSIPOWER VRLA / AGM batteries with a 2-year warranty. Contact us for stock and prices.

How to choose a UPS battery

The new battery must have the same voltage (e.g. 12V) as the existing one. Capacity (Ah) is chosen according to your needs: the same capacity gives the same backup time, while a higher-Ah battery (e.g. 9Ah instead of 7Ah) gives a longer runtime, provided it fits the device and the UPS charger supports it.

The battery dimensions and terminal type (Faston F1 / F2, M5, M6 or M8 bolt) must match the slot and connection cables in your device.

All batteries in the same string should be replaced at the same time with the same model. For long life, batteries should be used at an ambient temperature of 20–25 °C.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a sealed maintenance-free battery the same as a VRLA / AGM battery?

Yes. Batteries commonly called “sealed maintenance-free” are technically valve-regulated (VRLA) lead-acid batteries. AGM refers to the design in which the electrolyte is held in a glass-mat separator.

How long does a UPS battery last?

Service life depends on the battery series, ambient temperature and number of discharges. In the EUROBAT classification, general-purpose series have a 3–5 year design life and long-life series 10–12 years. An ambient temperature of 20–25 °C protects battery life.

Which battery is used in a shutter power supply?

Shutter power supplies usually use 12V 7Ah, 7.2Ah or 9Ah sealed batteries. The voltage must match the existing battery; if you want the shutter to run longer, you can choose a higher-capacity model (e.g. 9Ah instead of 7Ah) as long as it fits the battery slot.

What should I check when replacing batteries?

The voltage must match the existing battery; capacity can stay the same or be higher for a longer backup time. Dimensions and terminal type must suit the device, and all batteries in the same string should be replaced at the same time with the same model.
